With what’s happening in the Ukraine right now, is it time for Europe to band together and create an Army that can send a message to Russia?
According to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, that’s exactly what is needed to show that we are serious about protecting Europe’s assets and defending it’s values.
It is thought that Mr Juncker’s thoughts are merely a result of the Russian aggression towards the Ukraine and Crimea in 2014.
There is, of course the NATO army, which wouldn’t be impacted by such a move.
The idea would be for the 28 nations of the EU to add to the current ‘quick reaction’ force it already has, which has yet to see action.
In an interview with German newspaper Die Welt, Mr Juncker stated:
With its own army, Europe could react more credibly to the threat to peace in a member state or in a neighbouring state
Britain and France are currently against the idea, however a German Defence Minster Ursula Von Der Leyen has welcomed the idea, citing that it is in the future for Europeans to have a European Army.
In fact over the past 10 years, very few improvements have been made to enhance the security of Europe. This change could be forced upon Europe if the day comes when we are to fight yet another common enemy.
What are your thoughts? Would a European Army allow the West to further protect itself against Russia amid these rising tensions?
